Having recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, BARC is steeped in history yet embracing emerging technology.  Just a few short years ago membership was dwindling and the club’s future looked uncertain with just 4 members attending the AGM.  It was this meeting that signalled a seed change in the club’s philosophy.  A conscious effort was made to attract younger members to the hobby and within a few short months Burton Amateur Radio Club had three approved trainers, a new venue with examination centre facilities and a purpose built, well equipped shack which is available 7 days a week for members’ use.  Whilst the club’s  fully functional Sommerkamp FL-100B/FT-200B is still evident, pride of place has been taken by a state-of-the-art Flex 6500 SDR transceiver which is proving a great attraction for both young members and “old timers” alike.  Also operational in our shack are classic Kenwood TR751A and Icom IC 7400 transceivers.  These transceivers are ideal for training and use by those who prefer conventional radios over SDR technology. HF and VHF antennas are permanently installed so the club’s call G3NFC is again in regular use!

Great emphasis is placed on training and education and the club is fortunate to have the use of a large hall with A/V equipment to host regular training sessions and lectures.  These are often presented by members with specialist knowledge or experience.  A recent hugely popular and well attended talk was given by the local planning officer who provided lots of useful information on not just regulations but useful advice on applying for antenna planning permission.  Morse code classes are held regularly by an ex-navy operator and many other lectures and demonstrations take place during the year alongside purely social events such as the legendary Summer Barbecue.

Several members are keen VHF contest operators and are often seen braving the elements hoisting large antenna arrays on local high spots in search of that elusive DX contact!

Club membership embraces all ages and walks of life.  The focus is on enjoyment of our mutual hobby regardless of technical knowledge or specialist interests. Everyone is welcome.
